Papua
It is the most eastern island of Indonesia, the one of the largest island of Indonesian archipelago. Snowcapped Mountain peaks towering over glacial lakes, Mount Carstenz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya), the highest in the ocean continent (4,884 m above sea level). Honay is the traditional house of Papua, shaped housing with coarse grass roofs and wooden walls without windows. They are mostly found in Wamena in Jayawijaya Regency. Along the remote southeast coast, live the Asmat people, famous for their artistic “primitive” woodcarving and other treasures. The right chance to observe the rich culture of the hinterland is by seeing The Baliem festival, the massive tribal attraction involving all natives group on the surrounding area of the giant valley. All tribes bring their attributes, kotekas, art and crafts. The festival is held on every August or September.
